'Birds in a nest don't fight!' she tells us brood
on a wet, dark, winter’s afternoon.
Following nudges, punches, sulks,
she offers cards for snap, rummy, trumps.
'Happy Families?' she shuffles up Stitch the Tailor
but we continue beggaring our neighbour.
Then our squabbles ruffle feathers, the cards take fright
and like a charm of goldfinches flash off on their southward flight.
