Day 1

Maiden flight of the Dandy

"Get out from under my feet!"
The boy slouches off to the shed.
Brainwave.
Balances his Dandy Christmas annual
on top of
his brother's metal strap-on skates.
Puffs out his chest
like Desperate Dan.
Hurtles down the hill.
Scattering stones.
Skinning knuckles.
Braking, Sir Coward de Custard.
Heels of his shoes worn down to stumps.
And that's how they invented the skateboard.
